our lens photography group

2021 – 2023

community art project

In spring 2021, I proposed a new peer support group at the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC). I began facilitating a photography group each Friday from 1 – 2 p.m. at the Lew Middleton Drop-in to empower clients experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity to capture images of their lives and define their own narratives through the medium of photography.

Inspired by the images and stories shared by participants, I created a short documentary about the group in two days with a borrowed 480p camcorder. The documentary was selected as a finalist for the 2021 Impact Film Festival out of over 2000 entries from around the world.

Our participants shared how meaningful it would be to see their work in a gallery space. With our participants, we co-curated a book titled Life: Can I have another camera and applied to showcase the work at the Photographic Center Northwest’s first annual photo book and zine fair. We were accepted into the show and, as a group, showcased the work in company with professional photographers. Below is a sampling of photos from the publication.
